Dangers of New Media

Come close and come quick! I’m here to share with you something I find interesting and at the same time I find horrifying! That something that is the dastardly dangers of the new media! Now in new Media there are lots of countless things that can wrong, and that you should be aware of. But for today’s topic I am going to only discuss one. One thing that I think is one of the biggest dangers when is all the deception you can find on the Internet, particularly, Facebook. So why am I hating on the giant blue social butterfly? Well we are all (the majority) familiar with the show Catfish on MTV. Where the two detectives of romance Max and Nev courageously take on some Americas online relationships and see if everyone is who they say they are. About 50% or more of those couples on that show have a fictitious lover. As entertaining and thrilling, as the show is to watch, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the majority of the people were using a fake profile, with a fake name, and picture. People can be anybody they chose to be on the Internet, and frankly, that frightens me. Who knew that with the wonderful invention of Facebook could lead to so much deception. According to CNN there are over 83.09 million gag accounts on Facebook. 80.09 million is quite a number to wrap your head around. “In an updated regulatory filing released Wednesday, the social media company said that 8.7 percent of its 955 million monthly active users worldwide are actually duplicate or false accounts.”(Kelly) Now if that doesn’t get you wondering about who’s really in your friends list I don’t know what will. Even though we live in this new NEW media time it’s still just as easy to get duped or hurt. It’s amazing that with all the achievements we’ve made in technology and communications that predators can still find their ways into our computer screens. People need to play it smart when they’re on the web, especially if they’re looking for  love, just because a profile looks legitimate doesn’t mean it is.. You have to be careful with who you are conversing. Some standard advice that I would give any friend is to always ask if this person that you met online can video chat. There is no excuse for someone to not have a webcam of some kind of device in this day and age we live in now. If they refuse to video chat than refuse to talk to them, to me, that’s a red flag. Also if the person you’re talking to online keeps coming up with excuses for why they can’t meet, odds are they are not who they say they are. I hate to say that you can’t trust anyone you meet on the Internet but sadly the information is against the truth, for example  “duplicate accounts make up 4.8% (45.8 million) of Facebook's total active member tally.”(Kelly) It’s hard to be optimistic with those facts. So be smart my friends! Don’t let the profile picture fool you, you never know who you could be talking to in the digital world.

Blog # 3

MySpace.

I am going to talk about the social potato that is MySpace. Now for any of you who don’t know what MySpace is I’ll tell ya!

MySpace is a popular social networking website offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music and videos internationally.” (http://mashable.com) Well you guessed it; it’s a social media site where you can make friends, share music and videos. Exciting stuff? Yes. But does this all sound familiar to us? Is MySpace in anyway…
·      New?
·      Different?
·      Innovative?
Not exactly. I’m not quite sure that there is a need for MySpace in today’s new NEW social media world. And in fact I think that MySpace should just be gone all together (harsh, I know) Now I definitely don’t hate MySpace, in some ways it was the gateway to the social media sites that we have today! And for that I’m eternally grateful but I’m not sure if its necessary for MySpace to be around in our 2014 era. Four reasons come to mind when I think of MySpace and why it needs to be obsolete.
·      Number One: There’s an app for that. When MySpace had its Justin Timberlake makeover back in 2012 it was suppose to be innovative, fresh, and exciting, basically the next big thing. You could find videos, listen to music and connect with your favorite artists. This whole  “new MySpace” idea was suppose to be the saving grace of this sad social media site. But to the creators surprise it has not taken off. According to expandedramblings.com there are 36 million current MySpace users (http://expandedramblings.com, Smith) While according to statisticbrain.com there are 1,310,000,000 of monthly active Facebook users (www.statisticbrain.com) Facebook takes the cake, and it will continue taking the cake. There is no denying that Facebook is one of the most popular social media sites and that MySpace won’t ever compare. Facebook has created an untouchable social media kingdom; one that it rules.  In an article on gizmodo.com Sam Biddle wrights “There's too much to do on the New MySpace It's a chintzy web carnival. Spotify-style music streaming, YouTube-style video streaming, pseudo-tweets, a Faux Facebook News Feed, all swirled together. But unlike the services it copies and attempts to blend, there's no clear way to use New MySpace. It goes in too many directions at once. When you sit down in front of it for the first time, you're lost.”(Biddle) Sam hits the nail on the head with this statement. MySpace will never come back because it’s just a cop-out to other social media sites we already have!
·      Number two: Where the heck am I?? The second reason why MySpace should just take its long awaited dirt nap is that it’s to confusing! Social media is all about simplifying our lives, and making things easier, quicker, and more convenient. The new MySpace hasn’t really graced itself with those attributes. It’s confusing to try and get around new MySpace, first off it scrolls sideways which is just an awkward site for your brain to withstand. Along with scrolling sideways it’s difficult to figure out where you are or what to do. “There's a news feed that's sorta like Facebook's, showing you the latest things your friends have done—songs they've played, videos they've watched, musicians they've liked. But it scrolls sideways. And it's jittery. There's a catalog of streaming music—with all major labels onboard—but no coherent way to browse. You can scroll (sideways) through your friends' playlists, but it's a slow, clunky process of wading through giant thumbnails. You can search, but that brings up an artist's catalog, unsorted, with a mish-mash of "related artists" thrown in the mix. The entire audio component is somehow a visual headache.”(Biddle)
·      Number Three: Music sharing gone wrong. The third reason why MySpace should just silence itself is that it bit off more than it could chew. MySpace says to be a bunch of things instead of one main form of social media. It tries to be all forms of social media, which is its downfall, specifically with music sharing. Of of all the things that MySpace claimed to be one of the number one aspects it prided itself on was the fact that it was going to help you connect with your favorite artists and bands. As great as this sounds it’s not all that it is cracked up to be. Instead of artists returning to their old homepages and keeping the fans they already had with the sites old popularity the new “new” MySpace makes you start all over. As Brenden Mulligan states “getting musicians to care at all about MySpace again is a hard enough challenge. Getting them to care enough to try to rebuild a fan base on the platform is out of the question. And that’s what they’re expecting. Every musician starts out in the new MySpace with zero fans. They need to start from scratch. To tell their audience “Go back to MySpace and connect with us!” An example: “Britney Spears has about 1.5 million friends on the old MySpace. She has fewer than 7,000 connections on the new MySpace. Hell, even ever-present well-dressed JT has about 1.5 million friends on the old and 50,000 on the new.ew “New” MySpace makes you start from the beginning…from scratch”(Muligan)
·      Number Four: What is the point? My overall feeling when I think of MySpace or quote on quote “New” MySpace is that it’s a been there done that. All of the attractions that MySpace is trying to obtain have already been obtained, and our working just fine on their own. MySpace is like the 6th wheel on a date when compared to Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Pandora and YouTube. If they wanted to catch America’s attention they should have done it in another way. “The sad thing is that the New MySpace is just not fun to use. There's no reason to use it anyway. It's a cobbling-together things that don't belong together but have been roped into being neighbors. Is it a social network? Not really, and if so, it's a bad one. Is it a music discovery service? Maybe, but it's like looking into the wrong end of a telescope. Is it a photo sharing site? Haha, no. Is it Twitt—no. And yet it resembles these things.”(Biddle)
So that is my two cents when it comes to MySpace. Some social media just can’t come back. I used the “MySpace squandered the only thing it had left” article which is written by Brenden Mulligan here’s the link http://techcrunch.com/2013/02/02/myspace-squandered-the-only-thing-it-had-left/ and I also used Sam Biddle’s article titled “The New MySpace review: Just Die Already” here’s the link http://gizmodo.com/5965926/the-new-myspace-review-just-die-already

Blog Project!

Blog Project.

In the past ten years our country, heck, our world has had amazing breakthroughs in technological advancements. Due to these advancements in technology America and the world have adapted to new ways of living and communicating. Much of these have been positive but as is everything in life where there is a positive there is likely to be a negative. I will help you navigate through this crazy and distracting media reliant world we now belong to. I have made a list of the top ten things you should be aware of when dealing with the Internet.  Here is the crucial top ten tips that you need to be aware of * drum roll*

10.) Anyone who uses the Internet needs to be aware of how easy it is to get your information stolen. There are always people out there ready to scam you! Weather it is on a site, in a pop up or on your very own email. An important term that you need to familiarize yourself with is a term called “Phishing” Phishing is the action of someone trying to steal your information by sending you a phony email and when you click on said “phony email” you can download a dangerous virus that hacks into your computer stealing all your personal information and giving it to the hacker “Phishing email messages, websites, and phone calls are designed to steal money. Cybercriminals can do this by installing malicious software on your computer or stealing personal information off of your computer. Cybercriminals also use social engineering to convince you to install malicious software or hand over your personal information under false pretenses. They might email you, call you on the phone, or convince you to download something off of a website.”(http://www.microsoft.com)  According to Mashable.com they’re ten signs you should be aware of if you think you’re being scammed, remember to keep these in the back of your head just incase you receive a suspicious email; it could save you from a “phishing” attack.
Number One: Disembodied Links: Here are the types of emailed links that should make you especially wary:
links that are the only content in the body of an email
bit.ly or otherwise shortened links that don't display the actual address
hyperlinked text (for the same reason as shortened links — there's no indication of what you would be clicking)
"When in doubt, don't click. But to help you out, browsers like Google Chrome can reveal a link's full address when you hover over it with your mouse cursor. For shortened links, you can use nifty link expanders like LongURL to view the real content before clicking. "(Petronzio) Number Two: Inordinate number of Recipients: "If you get an email with hundreds of email addresses in the recipient field, yet the message seems directed toward one person, your scam sense should be on high alert." (Petronzio) Number Three: Vague, Generic or Non-existent Subject Lines: "Sure, you send emails without subjects to your friends all the time, but if an email pops up from an unrecognizable address with "(no subject)," be careful. The same goes for vague or generic subject lines, including "Fwd: private" or "Free to look!" If you have no idea what you're opening, it's probably best to leave it alone" (Petronzio) Number Four: Intense Enthusiasm: "WHEN IT COMES TO EMAIL SECURITY, CAPS LOCK CAN BE MORE THAN JUST ANNOYING — it can indicate spam. Overly enthusiastic emails with emphasis and exclamations (e.g. "I JUST LOST 45lbs W/ THE X-Fit fitness program!!1!!") are surefire signs that the information isn't what it seems "(Petronzio) Number Five: Grammar and Spelling: "You don't have to be a grammar nut to notice odd mistakes in scam emails. Look out for questionable syntax and major typos, especially if the email supposedly comes from a reputable company or bank. Also watch out for scammers that purposely misspell things to avoid your spam filter, such as "V1agr@" instead of "Viagra." (Tip: You probably shouldn't be buying Viagra via email, anyway.)"(Petronzio) Number Six: Strange Requests: This one's easy: "If someone is emailing you for medical assistance or writes, "Help me cheat on my husband," it's just not legit. That's what emergency contacts are for. And Snapchat. "(Petronzio) Number Seven: Urgency: "People don't typically use email to send urgent messages of an emergency nature. If you get an email that claims a situation is a matter of life or death (or a desperate person who needs money wired now), it's safe to assume the sender wouldn't be targeting you, a stranger, in the first place." (Petronzio) Number Eight: Sensitive Information Requests: "Unfortunately, people accidentally send secure information to scammers more often than you would expect. This is how scammers (that is, smart scammers) operate — many ask for personal information (credit card numbers, passwords) and disguise emails to look official. Companies, schools, banks and other institutions won't ask you to transmit sensitive information in an email. "(Petronzio) Number Nine: Name-Sender Disagreement: "Scam email addresses often have different names to dupe the recipient. Check the address before assuming something is true — an email from Match.com wouldn't have the email address contact@lightsaberduel.com "(Petronzio) and finally Number Ten: Surefire Guarantees: "You should know by now that nothing on the Internet is guaranteed. Promises to boost your sex life or quick money via working from home shouldn't be taken seriously. "Watch this video and women will adore you?" More like, "Click this link and regret it."(Petronzio) As stated by the Get Cyber Safe website there are “156 million Phishing emails sent everyday and 80,000 fall for the scam EVERY DAY and share their personal information” (http://www.getcybersafe.gc.ca) “And finally, another 10% of people who click the link are netted by the baited website. Their information results in stolen identities, financial loss, credit card frauds and other Internet scams” (http://www.getcybersafe.gc.ca) An example of a phishing story in action would be one concerning Nancy Doyle back in 2004. “Nancy Boyle woke up one morning last December to discover that someone had stolen $1,800 from her online bank account. Then came the $800 credit card charge for escort services that she and her husband Dan never ordered. The Boyles, who run a window treatment business out of their home in Racine, Wis., were getting a crash course in phishing. The first e-mail appeared to come from Bank One, warning that Mrs. Boyle's account would be suspended unless she updated her information to conform with the company's new anti-fraud measures. She clicked on the link that came with the e-mail and entered the data on the Web site. Then the money disappeared from her account. Not long after that, she got another message that looked like it came from eBay. It warned of fraudulent activity on her account and urged her to verify her details. She handed over her bank account number, Social Security number and her mother's maiden name -- the keys to her identity.”(Krebs) Even though this story may seem a little dated it still holds truth and terror. In less time than it takes to hit enter on your keyboard you could be giving a complete stranger the “the keys to YOUR identity” So be smart my friends and play it smart online, make sure your next email isn’t going to get you phished!

9.) You need to be aware that what you post on online social media sites like Facebook or Twitter can be very harmful to your career. There’s a new trend beginning in companies that they are starting to investigate your Facebook page to see if they will hire you. Posting something on Facebook that looks incriminating or reckless, regardless if your account is private or if it’s your weekend time. has the possibility to take you out of the employment game. What’s on your Facebook could get you fired before you’re even hired. As controversial as this subject is, it’s something to think about and definitely something to be aware of. “A recent survey of companies by CareerBuilder.com found that 45 percent of respondents said they screen potential job candidates by perusing their profiles on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter in search of warning signs that a candidate might not be a good fit. That 45 percent is more than double the previous year…”(Herald) To steer clear of job flops due to your Facebook profile Alexis Kleinman wrote an article for the Huffington post giving the top six that you should think about before you post.
Number One: Provocative/Inappropriate Photos
Number Two: Information About Drinking or Doing Drugs
Number Three: Bad-Mouthing a Previous Employer
Number Four: Poor Communication Skills (things that make you look illiterate)
Number Five: Racist, Sexist or Anti-Religious Remarks
Number Six: Lying (don’t get caught in a lie online) (Kleinman)
For example a teacher by the name of Ashley Payne in Barrow County Georgia was asked to leave her job at Appalachia High School in August of 2009. This young teacher had taken a trip to Europe and had posted some pictures of herself in a Guinness Brewery and a local Dublin Pub. Now even though Payne’s Facebook page was private she was friends with some of her fellow teachers when the principal became aware of these photos she was “to render her resignation or face suspension.” She ended up suing the school for being “not made aware of her rights” (Warren) All in all this teacher lost her job for having pictures of herself on vacation. As innocent as this action was it got her fired. Anything you post on the web is out there for life, so be careful, you never know who is watching. And by that I mean your potential employer could be watching, so be aware next time you post!

8.) Tagging along with my previous idea about being careful with what you post, I also have new thought you should think about and be very aware of. As our technology keeps getting more and more advanced it is endless what you can do with it and what you can share. And I’m not talking about pictures, or videos I’m talking about location. In every social media app you can put out to the world your location by Geo-tagging. What is geo-tagging you ask? “Geotagging is the process of adding geographical information to various media in the form of metadata. The data usually consists of coordinates like latitude and longitude, but may even include bearing, altitude, distance and place names. Geotagging is most commonly used for photographs…”(http://www.techopedia.com) If you’re taking a picture at the San Diego Zoo and you enabled Geo-tagging on your phone you could let the entire world of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram know where you are. Geo-tagging is something you need to be well familiarized with. A predator could easily find you, or a burglar would easily know that you weren’t home. Having all of your 300 plus followers know where you’re is a bit of a creepy and invasive concept. In an article by Myfoxphilly.com stated that in 2010 a study showed that 26 percent of online predators were using this kind of tracking information to get kids.  (www.myfoxphilly.com) And a study done in 2009 by the Department of Justice stated that about “25 percent of the 3.4 million people who reported being victims of stalkers during 2005-2006 said they been stalked using some form of cyber technology such as email or instant messaging”(Seville) And Rebecca Drake a senior analyst for the National Center for Victims of Crime stated that “it doesn’t cause stalking, but it makes stalking a lot easier” (Seville)  It is very easy for a predator to track your whereabouts by using Geo-tagging. If they are stalking your Facebook profile or your Twitter and you release information about your location they can easily find you there and then stalk you to your home. Back in 2010 a women by the name of Carri Bugbee ran into a terrifying situation when a website by the name of PleaseRobMe.com decided to use her as their next victim. The website in a way is designed as a scare me straight program to show their victims how easy it is to be stalked by consistently geo-tagging their locations. Even thought the website played a trick on Carri it still had shaken the young women and got her re-thinking her geo-tagging activity. “In the world of social networking, Carri Bugbee is hardly a novice. The social-media marketing strategist from Portland, Oregon, has 7,164 followers on Twitter, 1,197 friends on Facebook, and more than 500 connections on LinkedIn. But when she ventured into the world of geotagging—the technology behind many of the social networks that broadcast your location to the Internet—she received an unsettling wake-up call. One evening last February, she picked up her phone and "checked-in" to a local restaurant on foursquare, the popular location-based social network that lets others know where you are in real-time. Foursquare posted her location to her feed and Bugbee went back to chatting with her friends over the menu. That's when the hostess came over to the table and told her she had a call on the restaurant telephone. Bugbee didn't recognize the male voice on the other end of the line, and the voice didn't offer to introduce itself. It told her she shouldn't use foursquare because if she did, certain people might find out where she lived. She nervously laughed off the creepy comment, telling the caller it was pretty hard to find her house. That set him off. "You stupid bitch," he said, an opening to a string of insults. She quickly hung up, rattled. The caller had tracked down Bugbee through PleaseRobMe.com, a website designed to warn people about the risks of geotagging by aggregating and publicizing updates from foursquare. In Bugbee's case, the warning was effective.”(Seville) Even though this threat wasn’t real, these people (whose tactics are questionable) still proved a point. They knew what restaurant Bugbee was at, they knew where she was, and Bugbee had no idea. Just think about a real predator knowing where you are. It scares you, doesn’t’ it? It certainly scared Carri  “I was totally creeped out," she recalls. "I just didn't ever think it would happen to me ... I slept with all the lights on that night." She also immediately quit foursquare and hired a house sitter. She says she felt that someone "basically stalked me," and she's become, as she put it, a "geotagging curmudgeon." "I think that a lot of people have drunk the Kool-Aid without actually thinking that hard about" location-based technologies, says Bugbee. "At some point, some tragedy will occur."(Seville) There is definitely a lesson to be learned here. Be safe and be aware! You never know who could be lurking out there; keep your location to yourself!

7.) Social media sites like twitter, tumblr, instagram, Facebook and Pintrest can be very distracting and if you’re not careful they can even get addicting! You have to be aware that you can get addicted to social media, especially Facebook. Facebook is the number social media drug that you can get hooked on. Facebook addiction is no joke! There are signs and symptoms to it like any other addictive problem, just ask Cynthia Newton. Cynthia Newton broke her silence on her Facebook addiction in a CNN news article written by Elizabeth Cohen who is a CNN senior medical correspondent “I'm an addict. I just get lost in Facebook," Newton said. "My daughter gets so PO'd at me, and really it is kind of pathetic. It's not something I'm particularly proud of. I just get so sucked in."(Cohen) Newton who is so embarrassed by her Facebook “need” didn’t use her real last name in her CNN interview. She said that she spends about 20 hours a week on Facebook; she claims that it is half for work (she runs and online business) and the other half for fun. She has made several attempts to cut down on her Facebook time, but to no avail, the Facebook hunger always wins. "I can go a whole day without Facebook," she said. "But I've never made it through an entire weekend.”(Cohen) Even therapists are noticing a trend in Facebook addictive issues. Paula Pile a marriage and family therapist in Greensboro, North Carolina stated "Last Friday, I had three clients in my office with Facebook problems, It's turned into a compulsion -- a compulsion to dissociate from your real world and go live in the Facebook world." She also feels that the “problems arise when users ignore family and work obligations because they find the Facebook world a more enjoyable place to spend time than the real world.” Cynthia Newton revealed that she checks Facebook “first thing when she wakes up, and then she checks her Facebook page as many as seven times while at work, and then she'll check Facebook again when she gets home and one more time before she goes to sleep.” If you've been keeping count, that's about 10 times a day. (Cohen)  Another psychologist by the name of Joanna Lipari who is from the University of California, Los Angeles had compared Facebook to “The Truman Show” which is a 1998 film that featured Jim Carrey; in this movie Jim Carry is living in a fabricated world where nothing can go wrong. Joanna added to this by saying "Facebook is a fun, pleasant, happy, beautiful world. People only present the crème de la crème of their lives on Facebook. And these people want to be your friends! It's very seductive.” Paula Pile added to that statement saying “it's especially seductive when real life isn't going so well, In real life, people have morning breath, and you have to pay bills with them, and you argue about who's going to change the baby's diaper," she said. "But Facebook is happy land. You don't have to deal with any of that." Newton who is ashamed of how out of control her Facebooking has gotten told CNN “I've thought about going cold turkey, but that would make me so uncomfortable. I know I couldn't do it."(Cohen) So how can you avoid being a Facebook junkie? Well here are five tips provided by psychologists Joanna Lipari and Paula Pile. These could be the trick to kicking your Facebook habit, if you have one!
Number One: You lose sleep over Facebook: "If you're staying up late at night because you're on Facebook, and you're tired the next day, Facebook may be a compulsion for you," Lipari said. "You shouldn't be neglecting yourself because of Facebook."(Cohen)
Number Two: You Spend more than an Hour a day on Facebook: Pile says it's hard to pinpoint exactly how much is too much time to be spending on social networking.
"I can't imagine that anyone would need more than an hour a day on Facebook, and probably no one needs more than 30 minutes," she said. (Cohen)
Number Three: You become obsessed with old loves: Reconnecting with old friends is one of the great attractions of Facebook, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with "friending" an old boyfriend or girlfriend. But Pile warns that it can get out of hand very quickly. "One of my clients met up with an old boyfriend on Facebook. They started spending hours and hours into the night talking to each other on Facebook. She made some really inappropriate comments about how unhappy she was in her marriage," Pile said. "Her cousin saw the comments and told her parents, and the parents told the husband, and now they're in the process of getting divorced." (Cohen)
Number Four: You ignore work in favor of Facebook: "If you're not doing your job in order to sneak time on Facebook, you could have a real problem," Lipari said. (Cohen)
Number Five: The thought of getting off Facebook leaves you in a cold sweat: Sarah Browne, who writes the Guru of New blog, gave up Facebook for Lent last month when she realized that she had a "mild" addiction to the site. She's come up with "Seven Signs You May Be Ready for a Social Media Detox." Pile has her own quick test: "Try going a day without Facebook. If you find it causes you a lot of stress and anxiety, you really need to get some help." (Cohen) I’ve also gathered some statistics from www.lifementalhealth.com to give you an insight on how Facebook is as second nature as breathing.  According to the site
  • Approximately 50% of individual between the ages of 18 and 34 check Facebook immediately after waking up. More than half of these individuals check their Facebook pages on their smartphones before getting out of bed”(Reimer)
  • 48% of young Americans stated that they get their “news” through Facebook (Reimer)
  • ·      11% of individuals age 25 and under can be interrupted by a Facebook or Twitter message during sex, 22% of the same group can be interrupted by a message during a meeting, 24% can be interrupted while going to the bathroom and 49% can be interrupted during a meal. (Reimer)
  • ·      48% of Facebook users update their status or check for notifications after going to bed (Reimer)
  • ·      18% of individuals age 25 and under cannot go “more than a couple hours” without checking their Facebook page. (Reimer)

Now that you know the signs be aware and be honest with yourself! If you think you’re Facebooking too much you probably are. Social media sites as wonderful as they are, they are designed to aid our lives, not rule them.

6.) Not everything you read on the Internet is true. False information is always being spread around the web. For example as much as sites like Twitter can be helpful with spreading news and alerting the public it can sometimes be a major problem when the news they’re spreading is incorrect. NBC News recently posted a story of how social media users especially on Twitter were spreading false rumors that the Malaysia flight made a safe landing.Perhaps the most damaging rumor came shortly after the jet, which was carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, was reported missing Saturday local time: A story spread mainly on Chinese social media that the craft had made a safe emergency landing in Nanning, China. One Twitter user posted that he had "some inside news from a pilot uncle that #MH370 has emergency landed somewhere in China! Hope everyone is safe."”(Pepitone) These falsified claims spread like wildfire among local Malaysian media, who were publishing similar stories. Even a noted Malaysian digest published a story stating that the plan had landed safely in China (which was incorrect) Once the Digest realized this story held no truth they quickly updated their page. It’s remarkable and horrifying how one rumor can be the one single movement that causes a huge domino affect in journalism. “The Malaysia Airlines rumors echo the speculation and false stories that tend to whip through social media platforms in the wake of national tragedies. After last April's Boston Marathon bombing, for example, representatives for the social/news site Reddit were forced to apologize on behalf of users who falsely "identified" multiple people as the bombers.”(Pepitone) It’s probably one the most important things you need to be aware of when it comes to social media sites and the Internet, everything is fair game. Anyone can post anything, I’m not sure why people enjoy spreading false information but it is something that happens and it happens quite frequently. Here’s a few things you should think of when you’re reading something on the Internet, first thing you want to do is check the URL. There are six different types of URL’s you should be familiarized with, they are….
·      . com, which is a commercial site, the information provided by commercial interests is generally going to shed a positive light on the product it promotes. While this information might not necessarily be false, you might be getting only part of the picture. Remember, there's a monetary incentive behind every commercial site in providing you with information, whether it is for good public relations or to sell you a product outright. (http://www.usg.edu)
·      . edu, which means educational institution. Sites using this domain name are schools ranging from kindergarten to higher education. If you take a look at your school's URL you'll notice that it ends with the domain .edu. Information from sites within this domain must be examined very carefully. If it is from a department or research center at a educational institution, it can generally be taken as credible. However, students' personal Web sites are not usually monitored by the school even though they are on the school's server and use the .edu domain. (http://www.usg.edu)
·      . gov this is a government site. “If you come across a site with this domain, then you're viewing a federal government site. All branches of the United States federal government use this domain. Information such as Census statistics, Congressional hearings, and Supreme Court rulings would be included in sites with this domain. The information is considered to be from a credible source” (http://www.usg.edu)
·      . org “Traditionally a non-profit organization. Organizations such as the American Red Cross or PBS (Public Broadcasting System) use this domain suffix. Generally, the information in these types of sites is credible and unbiased, but there are examples of organizations that strongly advocate specific points of view over others, such as the National Right to Life Committee and Planned Parenthood. You probably want to give this domain a closer scrutiny these days. Some commercial interests might be the ultimate sponsors of a site with this suffix. (http://www.usg.edu)
·      . Mil Military. “This domain suffix is used by the various branches of the Armed Forces of the United States.”(http://www.usg.edu)
·      . net Network. “You might find any kind of site under this domain suffix. It acts as a catch-all for sites that don't fit into any of the preceding domain suffixes. Information from these sites should be given careful scrutiny” (http://www.usg.edu)
Now that you know the different URL’s that lie within the Internet be sure of which ones to rely on. It is always a good idea though to check and re-check your sources. For example if you’re getting your news online check out a couple of online newspaper sites, don’t just stick to one. As amazing as Twitter and Facebook are they should not be held as the most honest place to receive news. There are 58 million people who have a Twitter that is 9,100 tweets per-second (http://www.statisticbrain.com) just think of 58 million people all tweeting and re-tweeting incorrect information.  Be wise when it comes to the Internet and the constant flow of information that comes racing through it everyday. The point to this entry is always check and re-check!

5.) Since the creation of Facebook and all social media sites so much has changed in regards to human communication. You know longer need to write letters and wait 5 plus days for a response, all communication is now instant and easy. Social Media has had so many powerful and positive impacts (trying saying that five times fast) especially with communication. How has it made a positive impact you wonder? Well I’ll tell you! Social media has a way of connecting people from all over the planet; in a way it puts us all in the same fish bowel. On social media there are no walls to stop us from communicating with one another, it’s a very exciting and freeing thought if you really focus on it. On socialmediatoday.com Syed Noman Ali posted an article that really helps sum up the positives of the social media craze!
·      Number one on his list is that social media has positively affected are friends and relations “Social networks started as a place to connect with your friends in an easy an convenient way. Truly speaking, many of you might have found your old pals from school or college who were out of touch due to one reason or other, well I would say I have and I thank social networks for this. Social networks has provided us the opportunity to connect with people and build better relationships with friends with whom we are unable to meet personally, and let them know about our life and take input about their lives and events happening with them.”(Ali)
·      Number two on his list was that thanks to social media there is a decrease of communication barriers, “With social networks we are able to communicate our thoughts and perceptions over different topics with a large number of audiences, and raise our voice. The sharing feature available on the social networks makes your opinion about any topic reach huge number of people (even to those who are not on your friends list). We have the option to make groups with people who are like-minded and share the related news with them and ask for their opinion or input about the topic. Simply there are a number of options available for us to communicate with others on these social networks.” (Ali)
·      Number three on his list was that social media creates more opportunities for businesses “social networks have become a crucial part of many of us. We don’t even notice this but as soon as we open our desktops or laptops to access the web, we sub-consciously open our favorite social network just to see about the updates received. Businesses have noticed the value of social networks in our life, and they are using different techniques to promote their products. There are a number of customized applications being made on the social platforms, whose main purpose is to promote the product or brand. As social marketing is cost effective and brands have a huge audience, they are shifting more towards social marketing.”(Ali)  Social media, Facebook especially is one the of the biggest hands to shake when it comes to the reconnection of long loss friends and maybe even love. I for one can personally vogue for this. My father has been in the military for 32 years and as such I have traveled and seen a great deal of America in my 20 years (of course there’s more to see!) but I have connected with a great deal of people all over the place, if it wasn’t for Facebook I would have honestly never spoken to any of my old friends. Facebook is the reason I can still call people from Watertown, New York, Fairfax Virginia, and Oxford Michigan my friends. I can watch them grow and stay in the loop of what they’re doing, it’s always fun to see a friendly face from the past. And this of course can be said for Gay Cioffi and Mark Obenhaus. You’re probably wondering where the heck these names just came from, well I promise you I didn’t make them up! Gay Cioffi and Mark Obenhaus is a couple that reunited through Facebook after 35 years! Remarkable I know! Gay Cioffi and Mark Obenhaus once upon a time had a summer romance in the Hamptons back in 1978. “It was 1978 and Ms. Cioffi was spending the summer as an assistant in the artist Sheila Isham’s studio in Sagaponack, N.Y. She was 27 and had recently separated from her first husband. Every morning before work, she would go for a jog along Gibson Beach and return to the beach for the few hours before sunset. In mid-July, a tall, handsome bearded fellow with the shaggy long hair of the era would come running in the opposite direction, and then appear again during her beach visits later in the day. That would be Mr. Obenhaus, then 32 and a documentary filmmaker who was also separated from his first wife; he was between projects and had extra time to spend at his shared beach house down the street from Ms. Isham’s studio.” (Rutenberg) Once these two started talking it was a one-way ticket down romance drive “they spent every waking hour that Ms. Cioffi was not working together, “just talking, talking, laughing,” said Ms. Cioffi, who kept a detailed journal.” (Rutenberg) But like the movie Grease summer comes to an end and the romance along with it “but the summer sun has a way of temporarily bleaching out life’s inevitable stains. In the real world it was not going to work. Much like a plot from an Ephron romantic comedy, Ms. Cioffi recalled writing in her journal, “I’ve met this perfect person, but the timing is all wrong, and I really need to be independent and figure some things out.” (Rutenberg) So separated they were, she was Washington bound and he heard New York City calling his name. Time went on but every now and then they would think about each other from time to time “every so often Mr. Obenhaus would stumble upon his stash of Polaroids of Ms. Cioffi. “I would just think of her just very, very warmly, and kind of wonder, ‘What happened to her?’ ”(Rutenberg) Over the course of 35 years the two had lived separate lives, they had gone on in their careers and ended up marrying different people and raising family’s. But this was not the end for our summertime lovers, soon Ms. Cioffi divorced from her second husband and sadly Mr. Obenhaus’s wife died tragically of breast and brain cancer. After there second love affairs Cioffi and Obenhaus had given up love, they both sweared that they would never love again… She assumed her romantic life was in the past. “I thought, ‘I’ve been married twice, I’ve been so lucky to find love and romance,’ ” she said. “I wasn’t looking for that again. That part of my life was basically over.”… “He took care of her devotedly for all of those years and then she died and he said to me, ‘I’ll never get married again,’ ” said Richard Brick, a close friend and longtime production partner. “And it was heartbreaking.”(Rutenberg) To these two surprise that would not be the case. In June of 2012 Nora Ephron died her death had taken Ms. Cioffi back to the Hamptons of 78 when she and Mr. Obenhaus would drive by her house with all this nostalgia in her heart Ms. Cioffi told her 32 -year-old niece Carly Cioffi told her about her summer in Sagaponak and Mr. Obenhaus (Rutenberg) being any young niece of course you want your grandmother to be happy! Carly convinced her grandmother to look Mr. Obenhaus up on Facebook. “His beard was gone, his shaggy brown hair was grayer, and his cheeks were more sunken, but she was again drawn to his blue eyes. She made a “friend request” and promptly panicked. But this lasted only for the four minutes that it took Mr. Obenhaus to respond: “So nice to see your name appear. I thought of you and that summer we met when Nora Ephron passed. I have a home not far from where we met and was at Gibson Beach this weekend. I hope we can catch up some day. Life is too short, as they say.”(Rutenberg) Ever since this “panicked” friend request Mr. Obenhaus and Ms. Cioffi have been together. Two young lovers reunited after all this time, and they have Facebook to thank. If it wasn’t for social media these two may have never rekindle their long lost flame for one another. “They were married Aug. 3 in Springs, on the balcony overlooking Three Mile Harbor at the East Hampton Point resort.”(Rutenberg) This story has to be one of the most romantic and joyful story I have heard in a long time, if you would like the full scoop, in detail, click on this link http://www.nytimes.com and type in Gay Cioffi and Mark Obenhaus. Every 20 minutes on Facebook there are 2 million friend requests sent, in Gay Cioffi and Mark Obenhaus they were just a number in a statistic until they connected or in this case re-connected. So check your friend requests, you never know who could be requesting you!

4.) Thanks to the Internet we can now stream movies and TV shows. Sites like Netflix, Vudu, Amazon prime, and Hulu are sites that you can go on to stream movies or TV shows. Being able to have these sites makes your television life more convenient to your actual life, such a broad statement I know! But you can watch what you want to watch when you can afford to watch it. The crown jewel of all web TV/movie sites is Netflix. Netflix has as the incredible number of 29.2 million subscribers (www.statisticbrain.com) and personally speaking I’m one of them. One of my favorite things to do is to go on Netflix and have a viewing binge party all to myself. I have to thank Netflix for my obsessions with the TV show Supernatural. Netflix has the entire season so far which is eight seasons or so; a girl could stay up for a straight week looking at Jenson Ackle’s face. But coming back to a more serious note Netflix is not only convenient but it holds serious weight when it comes to their audience. This site knows how to people please “while competing online TV services are producing original content, Netflix has the crown. Original series like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" are major critical competitors to award-winning cable TV series. Also, because Netflix doesn't operate with the restrictions and strict Nielsen ratings guidelines of a cable production company, it has chosen to restore hope to particular audiences. Several years after the critically acclaimed series "Arrested Development" was canceled, Netflix revived it. And when "The Killing" suffered a premature death on AMC, Netflix chose to bring it back for one last season and give fans closure. Netflix is truly a company that knows its audience” (http://internet-tv-sites-review.toptenreviews.com) If you don’t already have one you should invest in getting a Netflix account it’s available on any device with Internet connection “while Netflix debuted with a computer-only online TV model; it has grown a great deal of added apps for every smart device available. The streaming service is accessed using smart TVs, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, tablets and smartphones. Essentially, anything with an Internet connection can access streaming TV through Netflix.”(http://internet-tv-sites-review.toptenreviews.com) As stated previously if you don’t have one, get one! This is one Internet creation you don’t want to miss out on!

3.) I don’t want to sound to cliché here but I have a passion for fashion. One thing I am so happy that we can do on the Internet is …yup! You’ve guessed it! SHOP. Something you need to be aware of is online shopping! There are 65 million beautiful people on this earth and about 27 percent of them shop online, and of course during the holidays that number shifts to about 55 percent (http://www.dealjoy.com) Let me tell you why online shopping is all around better than in-store shopping.
·      Better Prices: who doesn’t want cute things for cheap? “The vast majority of online stores offer prices that are much lower than what you will find at a physical store. There are a few reasons for this. The first is because many people use the Internet to find cheaper items. Online business owners understand this. They will usually reduce their profit margin to get more customers. Another reason is because you can easily browse through dozens of different websites to find the best price. You can do the same at a mall, but it would take about an hour or longer. You also may not be taxed because most ecommerce stores won’t tax you unless they are stationed in your state” (http://quartsoft.com)
·      Convenience: You had me at no lines! “Shopping online is convenient. You don’t need to get dressed and drive to your favorite store. You can easily visit their website, find the product you want and buy it without getting out of your pajamas. It’s also convenient because you don’t need to wait for the store to open. If you work irregular hours or are very busy, then you probably don’t have the time to visit the store. Shopping online allows you to buy things without hurting your schedule.”(http://quartsoft.com)
·      Variety: You know what they say the more the merrier. “Most physical stores have a limited array of products. They can only hold so many items, and there are often many policies affecting the availability of products. For example, there might be a certain item that is only available to those versions of the business that exist in the mall. Shopping online allows you to find many products that you wouldn’t be able to find in a physical store. You can also buy products that may not logically go together like candy canes and quilts.”(http://quartsoft.com)
·      Fewer Traps: If I say no, I mean no! “Physical stores are made to lure you into buying more things. They use posters, sales messages, colors and product placement to make you buy additional items. The most popular products are typically in the back because the owner wants you to view all of his or her other products. Many people will find a few additional items by the time they reach the thing they came in for. These tactics are not as pronounced with online stores. This means that you won’t feel the pressure to buy other things. (http://quartsoft.com)
·      Discrete Shopping: I won’t tell if you don’t! “Physical stores often make it difficult to buy certain items. For example, buying lingerie without getting a few awkward stares is nearly impossible. There are many instances of this, and sometimes you might feel embarrassed for no reason. Shopping online gives you privacy because you won’t have people looking at you while you shop. Not only that, but the receipts are usually made so that no one will know what you bought” (http://quartsoft.com)
These are valid reasons to take into account next time you hit the web. It’s fun to go on multiple different retail sights and just let your brain wonder over all the clothes. It’s shopping without all the real hassle of shopping. Now as big of a fan as I am about online shopping you have to be smart with the sites you choose to shop on. You don’t want to have an experience like Clarabelle Rodriguez had. Clarabelle was shopping online for some new glasses when she discovered a spot below “Google’s version of the gold-medal podium” She found the sight DecorMyEyes.com, at first this seemed like a real deal sight. She had order a pair of Ciba Vision contact lenses all for the cost of $361.97. Who knew that this purchase was “the start of what Ms. Rodriguez would later describe as one of the most maddening and miserable experiences of her life” (Segal) DecorMyEyes.com wasn’t an actual retail site for glasses it was actually a scam run by a man who goes by the name Tony Russo or Stanley Broker some people think the scammers real name is Vitaly Borker. What this one man has done is scam tons of unwilling victims out of their money by collecting their information and then threatening them if they don’t’ comply with what he wants. The next day, a man named Tony Russo called to say that DecorMyEyes had run out of the Ciba Visions. Pick another brand, he advised a little brusquely. “I told him that I didn’t want another brand,” recalls Ms. Rodriguez, who lives in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. “And I asked for a refund. He got rude, really obnoxious. ‘What’s the big deal? Choose another brand!’” With the contacts issue unresolved, her eyeglasses arrived two days later. But the frames appeared to be counterfeits and Ms. Rodriguez, a lifelong fan of Lafont, remembers that even the case seemed fake. Soon after, she discovered that DecorMyEyes had charged her $487 — or an extra $125. When she and Mr. Russo spoke again, she asked about the overcharge and said she would return the frames. “What the hell am I supposed to do with these glasses?” she recalls Mr. Russo shouting. “I ordered them from France specifically for you!” “I’m going to contact my credit card company,” she told him, “and dispute the charge.” Until that moment, Mr. Russo was merely ornery. Now he erupted “Listen, bitch,” he fumed, according to Ms. Rodriguez. “I know your address. I’m one bridge over” — a reference, it turned out, to the company’s office in Brooklyn. Then, she said, he threatened to find her and commit an act of sexual violence too graphic to describe in a newspaper.” (Segal) That line sends shivers up my spine every time I read this story. Clarabelle tried to dispute the charges that were being placed upon her Citi card ignoring the threats that Russo was firing her way “two days later, she received another e-mail from Mr. Russo. “Close the dispute with the credit card company if you know whats good for you,” he wrote. “Do the right thing and everyone goes away. I AM WATCHING YOU!”(Segal) At this point in the game I would be exceptionally scared and have police surround my apartment, but Clarabelle pressed on. She never dropped the suite until one day the Citi bank had closed their case because Clara had indicated that she would be accepting the responsibility of the charges. Now wait doesn’t this seem off to you? This poor women has spent a great deal of time getting the charges disputed but now Citi is telling her she’s accepted them? Something about this isn’t right. Well apparently somebody called the Citi bank posing as Clara telling them that she would be accepting the charges, and since the call wasn’t recorded they have no evidence that this is true. (Segal) So now Clarabelle is stuck with a sum of money to pay and the short end of the stinky evil stick. The sad thing is that this guy is a professional and has done this multiple times by DecorMyEyes.com. As enthusiastic as I am about online shopping be aware that there are still creeps online looking to take anybody’s hard earned money. Be cautious, stick to the sites you know, and maybe stay within the gold member Google club.
2.) Social media is a great tool for promotion. So many bands and even businesses have made it big thanks to social media, I mean look at the people who created social media sites. They have created lively hoods for themselves by taking advantage of the technological advancements around them. Use social media and the Internet to your advantage. Create a fitness blog and if you get enough followers you get paid, promote your music with twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, maybe even get vine famous. There are so many entrepreneurial opportunities out there, all social media ideas were just that, ideas, and now some people can’t go days without them, for some people those ideas gave birth to their careers. Take a chance and see what could happen! I am going to pull information from reason 5 when Ali stated that social media creates more opportunities for businesses “social networks have become a crucial part of many of us. As social marketing is cost effective and brands have a huge audience, they are shifting more towards social marketing.”(Ali)  And what great advice if you’re a struggling small business or the new kid on the block. Use social media to your advantage, get a twitter and make page and tweet about your business, if you’re hiring, what your hours are what makes you different then the other competition out there; get a helpful following. You could also make a Facebook page and get your name out there! Nowadays businesses thrive off of being well known, you have to come to where the people are at and then they will come to you. For example Michael Mendez owns four area fuel stations around Miami and he keeps them well founded, how? You way wonder? Well Mendez has learned the game of branding with social media “Mendez strategically has branded his four Miami-area fuel stations as much more than places for a fill-up. Using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, he has created buzz about craft beers and other products inside the station shop, where the profit margins are higher than at the pump. “Branding in today’s world is knowing people and relating to them,” said Mendez, whose Mendez Fuel customers often share the photos and spread the word online about his new arrivals. In recent years, small-business owners like Mendez have turned to social media, email and mobile marketing websites to build visibility for their brands. In 2014, say experts, digital marketing is no longer simply a way to bump up brand awareness: It has become essential. With 73 percent of U.S. Internet users turning to social networking sites and 53 percent of American adults carrying a smart phone, businesses that don’t employ social network marketing may find themselves losing out to the competition. “If you are counting on your business to generate profit for a while or if you plan to leave it as a legacy for a family member, if you’re not branding and marketing online, you’re being irresponsible,” says Stephen Cabeza, founder of Amplification Inc, a Fort Lauderdale social media marketing company. (Goodman) These men couldn’t have hit the nail on the head any better! Times are changing; people are receiving their information differently. We are heavily reliant on social media and the Internet to get us through life; it has become part of everything we do. It only makes sense that businesses jump on this fast moving locomotive that is social media, as I stated earlier social media has a way of putting us all in the same fish bowel. What Mendez is doing is using his thinking cap. The list of possibilities is endless for businesses with social media!

1.) 12 months prior to the 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey, 16.2% of students had been electronically bullied, including being bullied through e-mail, chat rooms, instant messaging, websites, or texting (www.meganmeierfoundation.org).  25% of social media teens have had an experience that resulted in a face-to-face argument or confrontation with someone. 22% have had an experience that ended their friendship with someone, 13% have had an experience that caused a problem with their parents, 13% have felt nervous about going to school the next day, 8% have gotten into a physical fight with someone else because of something that happened on a social network site, and 6% have gotten in trouble at school because of an experience on a social network site. (www.meganmeierfoundation.org) From 2010-2011, 1 million children reported being harassed, threatened, or subjected to other forms of cyber bullying on Facebook (www.meganmeierfoundation.org).  There has always been bullying, as much as I wish that this unfortunate and horrible epidemic would cease to exist in our society, it hasn’t. With the birth of the Internet and all the new media sites that were brought from it, bullying could now escape from the playground and into the computer screen. Cyber-bullying. What is Cyber-bullying? Cyber-bullying by definition is “the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature.”(https://www.google.com) Cyber-bullying is something people use to terrify those who they cannot face in person, though cyber-bullying is not necessarily face to face contact it is still hurtful and harmful. There have been numerous deaths linked to on-line bullying, it’s both tragic and depressing that sites like Facebook which were intended to make life better could be the tools in which some are ended. As you have probably noticed many of the statistics I have been using in this entry thus far have been from the MeganMeierFoundation.org. Megan Meier was a young, and beautiful 13-year-old girl who killed herself due to cyber-bulling. Her story is one that is well known because of the tragedy and shock that surrounds it. Megan’s bullies were not random “mean” girls but a whole family who knew the Meier’s well, this bully was one who was close friends with Megan, one who knew that she struggled with depression and body image issues. “She loved swimming, boating, fishing, dogs, rap music and boys. But her life had not always been easy, her mother says. “She was heavy and for years had tried to lose weight. She had attention deficit disorder and battled depression. Back in third grade she had talked about suicide, Tina says, and ever since had seen a therapist. But things were going exceptionally well. She had shed 20 pounds, getting down to 175. She was 5 foot 5½ inches tall. She had just started eighth grade at a new school, Immaculate Conception, in Dardenne Prairie, where she was on the volleyball team. She had attended Fort Zumwalt public schools before that. Amid all these positives, Tina says, her daughter decided to end a friendship with a girlfriend who lived down the street from them. The girls had spent much of seventh grade alternating between being friends and, the next day, not being friends, Tina says. Part of the reason for Megan's rosy outlook was Josh, Tina says. After school, Megan would rush to the computer. "Megan had a lifelong struggle with weight and self-esteem," Tina says. "And now she finally had a boy who thought she was really pretty." It did seem odd, Tina says, that Josh never asked for Megan's phone number. And when Megan asked for his, she says, Josh said he didn't have a cell and his mother did not yet have a landline. And then on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, Megan received a puzzling and disturbing message from Josh. Tina recalls that it said: "I don't know if I want to be friends with you anymore because I've heard that you are not very nice to your friends. "Frantic, Megan shot back: "What are you talking about?"(www.meganmeierfoundation.org) This is when the world of Megan Meier started to shatter, coming from a girls perspective it’s a wonderful feeling when a boy likes you, and at that age it seems like everything. Megan seemed to really care for Josh and could not understand why he was saying these concerning things to her; she was at a loss for words. In the weeks following, Josh was sending Megan even more disturbing messages asking why she was so mean and telling her that he had shared their personal messages with other people. “Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, was a rainy, bleak day. At school, Megan had handed out invitations to her upcoming birthday party and when she got home she asked her mother to log on to MySpace to see if Josh had responded. Why did he suddenly think she was mean? Who had he been talking to?”(www.meganmeierfoundation.com) Megan didn’t understand. A few minutes later and already distraught Megan saw that Josh was posting bulletins about her, which are surveys on MySpace, the bulletins read” Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat."(www.meganmeierfoundation.org) The last message that Megan received from Josh before she signed off for the very last time was "Everybody in O'Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you." (www.meganmeierfoundation.org) And with the last statement ringing in her head Megan Meier ran upstairs and killed herself. "I had this God-awful feeling and I ran up into her room and she had hung herself in the closet." Megan Taylor Meier died the next day, three weeks before her 14th birthday. (www.meganmeierfoundation.org) The cyber-bully in the Megan Meier suicide is what leaves you with an aching in your heart, the people who were bullying her were one of her ex- friends, that ex-friends mother, an employee who worked with the mother (who helped set up the fake account) and a random girl who thought it was “ok” because it was being monitored by adults. The police report reads as such "(She) stated in the months leading up Meier's daughter's suicide, she instigated and monitored a 'my space' account which was created for the sole purpose of communicating with Meier's daughter. "(She) said she, with the help of temporary employee named ------ constructed a profile of 'good looking' male on 'my space' in order to 'find out what Megan (Meier's daughter) was saying on-line' about her daughter. (She) explained the communication between the fake male profile and Megan was aimed at gaining Megan's confidence and finding out what Megan felt about her daughter and other people. "(She) stated she, her daughter and (the temporary employee) all typed, read and monitored the communication between the fake male profile and Megan …"According to (her) 'somehow' other 'my space' users were able to access the fake male profile and Megan found out she had been duped. (She) stated she knew 'arguments' had broken out between Megan and others on 'my space.' (She) felt this incident contributed to Megan's suicide, but she did not feel 'as guilty' because at the funeral she found out 'Megan had tried to commit suicide before.”(www.meganmeierfoundation.org) In the Meier’s eyes the end result was to humiliate Megan "I know that they did not physically come up to our house and tie a belt around her neck," Tina says. "But when adults are involved and continue to screw with a 13-year-old - with or without mental problems - it is absolutely vile. "She wanted to get Megan to feel like she was liked by a boy and let everyone know this was a false MySpace and have everyone laugh at her. "I don't feel their intentions were for her to kill herself. But that's how it ended. (www.meganmeierfoundation.org) It’s so heartbreaking that this young life was not able to blossom into the beautiful journey it was suppose to take. It was only three weeks before Megan’s birthday a time when you would celebrate life, she had bought a new dress for her party and everything "She and her mom went shopping and bought a new dress," Ron says. "She wanted to make this grand entrance with me carrying her down the stairs. I never got to see her in that dress until the funeral." (www.meganmaierfoundation.org) There is just an unmistakable pain in the story of Megan Meier that I can feel but will never be able to fully understand. It’s important to be aware that Cyber-bullying is out there and it could happen to you or your children. The heart-breaking death of Megan Meier has unfortunately found its way into other families. My hope and prayer is that the hideous and vicious reality of bullying will one day end, and that children and young adults won’t be afraid to go to school or go online, as Ellen DeGeneres says at the end of every show “be kind to one another” (http://www.ellentv.com/tags/Quotes/) To read more on the Megan Meier Story and how to get involved in the Megan Meier foundation click the link here! http://www.meganmeierfoundation.org/megans-story.html
